Recent Salmonella Outbreaks

Charcuterie and Antipasto Sold at Sam’s Club and Costco Linked to 22 State Salmonella Outbreak (January 2024)

A recall has been issued for Busetto brand charcuterie platters sold at Sam’s Club and Fratelli Beretta antipasto packages sold at Costco. Both of these products have been linked to a large Salmonella outbreak in 22 states. Consumers who have purchased this product should not eat it.

Malichita Cantaloupe Salmonella Outbreak (October-November 2023)

A Salmonella outbreak linked to Malichita brand cantaloupe imported from Mexico has led to at least 99 people in 32 states becoming sick, including 45 hospitalizations and 2 deaths. The melons were sold whole under the Malichita brand name and cut under other brand names at stores including ALDI and Walmart.

Gills Diced Onion Salmonella Outbreak (October 2023)

A Salmonella outbreak linked to Gills fresh diced onions sickened 73 people in 22 states. Of the 65 people with available information, 15 were been hospitalized. The affected onions were sold at Basha’s Market, Chefstone, Smart & Final, and Stater Bros. stores in Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.

ShopRite Ground Beef Salmonella Outbreak (August 2023)

A Salmonella outbreak linked to ground beef sold at ShopRite stores sickening 18 people in four states. The patients became ill on dates ranging from April 27, 2023, to July 6, 2023, seven of them were so sick they needed to be hospitalized.

Deli Items Sold at Fresh Market in Buckhead, GA (January-July 2023)

A Salmonella outbreak linked to deli items served at a Fresh Market store in Buckhead, GA, sickened 15 people, half of whom required hospitalization, according to Georgia health officials.

Salmonella outbreak at Chilis’s South Indian Cuisine in Seattle  (September 2022)

At least three people are part of a Salmonella outbreak at Chilis’s South Indian Cuisine in Seattle, according to the Seattle and King County health department. The illnesses were reported among customers who visited the restaurant, located at 4220 University Way NE, in September 2022.

Jif Peanut Butter Salmonella Outbreak (May, 2022)

Multiple Jif Peanut Butter products have been recalled after being linked to a Salmonella Outbreak in 12 states. The CDC has identified at least 14 people sickened in this outbreak, 2 sick enough to require hospitalization. Recalled products have lot codes with the first seven digits between 1274425 and 2140425. The lot code is listed below the “Best if Used By” date. Consumers should not use affected product. Possible Turkey Jerky Salmonella Outbreak (November-December, 2021)

There is a Salmonella Javiana outbreak that the FDA has connected top at least 28 people sick with salmonellosis. Victims of this outbreak were first identified in November 2021.  Salmonella lawyers on Pritzker Hageman’s food safety team have been independently analyzing data from this outbreak and believe it may be related to contaminated turkey jerky.  We are continuing to investigate to confirm this theory and determine what brands might be affected.

Onions sold at restaurants, grocery stores, food service and in meal kits have been linked to over 890 Salmonella illnesses nationwide. Recalls of onions and onion-containing products have been initiated by: Walmart, Target, HelloFresh, Green Giant, EveryPlate, ProSource and Keeler Family Farms. Contaminated onions may have been sold and used by grocery stores, restaurants, and food service companies not on this list.

Trader Joes’s and Wegman’s Citterio “Salame Sticks” (September-October, 2021)

Originally identified in Minnesota, salami snacks sold under the name “Citterio Salme Sticks” at Trader Joe’s and Wegman’s have sickened at least 20 people in eight states. California, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey and New York all have known cases linked to this outbreak.

Seafood produced by Northeast Seafood Products of Denver, CO has sickened over 100 people in 14 states. All but two of those sickened lived in or traveled to Colorado during the week they got sick.  The recalled fish was served in restaurants and sold at Albertsons, Safeway and Sprouts grocery stores.

Hardie’s Crabmeat linked to a Salmonella outbreak was sold in multiple locations throughout Maine. Four people in Maine are known to have been sickened as has one person in New Hampshire.
